A community becomes your place in the world that allows you and your family members to have a sense of belonging.  You have the opportunity to make great friends and shape the direction your community is headed. The satisfaction and pride that comes from helping others is a good reason to be involved.   When you commit your time and effort to your community, you help make it a better place for you and for your family so the feeling of fulfillment can be very strong. Here are a few ways  to get you started in the right direction.

CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS

If you’re interested in having a hand in the decision making for the city, North Miami’s city council meetings is a good start. The City Council meetings are on every second and fourth Tuesday of each month. They are held at the North Miami council chamber located at City Hall, 2nd floor 776 NE 125 Street North Miami , FL 33161

CITY BOARDS

North Miami recognizes volunteers’ unique contributions and encourages involvement in the policy-making process through service as an advisory board or committee member. Most City Boards are created by ordinance to provide advice and recommendations to City Council on diverse matters of public concern.There are 20 different boards and committees in the city of North Miami. Some key ones are the Community Relations Board led by Deputy City Manager, Arthur H. Sorey. This committee meets 7pm every 3rd Thursday of each month. For the older community the Senior Citizens Advisory Board led by North Miami, Chief of Staff, Natasha Colebrook-Williams meets on the third Thursday of each month at 3:30pm. There is also a board for the youth, called the Youth Opportunity Board which is directed by Recreation Coordinator, Annalisa Walker. Meetings are held every second Wednesday of each month at 4:30pm. City council appoints members during their meetings. Residents can get an application from the office of the City Clerk to begin the process.

NOMI HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION

As a resident of North Miami you have the ability to be a key part of the changes in your own community. Joining the NoMi Homeowners Association gives you opportunities to be involved in the ordinance making process to ensure the upkeep of things such as your local parks, swimming pools, neighborhoods, etc. If you go on the North Miami website northmiamifl.gov under residents there is a link for the Homeowners Association. On this website residents can find their neighborhood and identify who to call, as well as the various days and times you meet. If by any chance you don’t have an association to join because you do not see your neighborhood listed, you’re able to join the NoMi neighbors Association.

MONTHLY EVENTS

The great city of North Miami celebrates things for all ages, cultures, and families. From Haitian heritage month to the city’s 90 year anniversary. You can find everything in North Miami from food festivals, concerts, to movies on the lawn. There is always something going on for you to enjoy. Go to www.NorthMiamiFL.gov and search for current events to see what’s going on this month in your area.

VOLUNTEERING

The City of North Miami Parks and Recreation Department is in need of a good core of volunteers for many of their Special and Community Events. The Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide array of volunteer opportunities in the areas of community, health & wellness, sports & recreation, and environment. They are always in need of responsible and driven individuals to work hands on in their events. Throughout the years many of their larger events, such as Halloween Haunted Trails, Thanksgiving Day Parade, Earth Day, Spring Egg Hunt, and July 4th events have been successful because of the help that they get from volunteers! KEEPING NoMi BEAUTIFUL

North Miami established an initiative in 2016 called the Keep North Miami Beautiful initiative. It focuses on litter prevention, beautification and community improvement. It will also zero in on ways to reduce the impact of waste in the City of North Miami. The committee for this beautification movement is made of department leaders and residents alike.
